This casting is built from a substantial number of separately fitted metal parts, and the Streamliner's fully enclosed bodywork, covering wheels that most rivals left fully exposed, is reproduced with genuinely smooth, unbroken surfacing. The bonnet opens to reveal the fuel-injected straight-eight engine beneath, a technically advanced unit for its era, while the silver bodywork carries the depth and finish appropriate to a factory-backed works entry. Race number twenty and the period Mercedes livery sit crisply against the aerodynamic panels.

A Dramatic Return to Grand Prix Racing

Mercedes returned to Formula 1 at the 1954 French Grand Prix at Reims after an extended absence from top-level motorsport, and the fully streamlined W196 finished first and second on debut, with Juan Manuel Fangio taking victory and Karl Kling, driving this car, finishing runner-up. That immediate success on a fast, low-drag circuit suited to the enclosed bodywork demonstrated just how seriously Mercedes had prepared for its comeback, and the Streamliner body was later swapped for an open-wheel version on circuits where the enclosed wheels proved a handling disadvantage. This particular configuration therefore represents a specific, short-lived aerodynamic experiment rather than the car's only form.
