The gullwing coupe gets the headlines, but Brabus built a Roadster version of its SLS AMG 700 Biturbo too, trading vertical hinges for a power-folding roof while keeping every mechanical change underneath. Minichamps casts both, and the differences between them are where this model earns its shelf place.

Conventional Doors and a Folding Roof Replace the Gullwing

Mercedes built the SLS AMG Roadster with standard forward-opening doors, since the extra chassis bracing an open car needs ruled out the upward-hinged gullwing arrangement fitted to the coupe, a genuine engineering compromise the real car made. Minichamps' tooling reflects that honestly rather than pretending the Roadster is simply a coupe with the roof cut off. The fabric roof is moulded in its closed position, and the panel definition around the stowage bay and rear deck has to work harder here than on a coupe casting, since the folded roof shape needs to read correctly beneath the rear glass line. Brabus's own aerodynamic addenda, the front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser, transfer straight across from the coupe unchanged, and the shut lines around the conventional doors are tighter than the gullwing arrangement typically allows, since there is no roof-mounted hinge geometry to accommodate.

Biturbo Power and Brabus's Chassis Changes at 1:18

The "700" designation carries over from the coupe: Brabus's biturbo conversion of the SLS AMG's naturally aspirated V8 pushes output well beyond standard AMG specification, and the lowered ride height Brabus applied to the suspension is visible in the stance at 1:18. Minichamps casts the body in zinc alloy, and the weight difference against a resin piece of the same scale is obvious the moment it is lifted from its tray. Brabus's monoblock wheel design sits correctly within the arch, distinct from the factory AMG alloy pattern, and the Pearl White paint carries the same flake depth as the coupe under direct light, catching unevenly across the bonnet in a way flat white finishes never do.
