Minichamps' 1:18 diecast reproduces Willi Kauhsen's number 2 Porsche 917/10, winner of a 1973 Interserie 300km round at the Nürburgring. Developed from Porsche's turbocharged Can-Am programme, the 917/10 is distinct from the naturally aspirated 917K that raced Le Mans. Diecast construction captures the car's dramatic wide bodywork and towering rear wing with genuine structural rigidity for display.
About the Porsche 917/10 #2 W. Kauhsen Interserie 300km Nurburgring Winner 1973 Minichamps 1:18
TL;DR: Minichamps' 1:18 diecast reproduces Willi Kauhsen's number 2 Porsche 917/10, winner of a 1973 Interserie 300km round at the Nürburgring. Developed from Porsche's turbocharged Can-Am programme, the 917/10 was a purpose-built sports prototype distinct from the 917K that raced Le Mans, and this diecast captures its short, potent European Interserie career.
The 917/10 is a less famous relative of the 917K that won Le Mans, but it was arguably the more technically radical car. Turbocharging transformed Porsche's flat-12 into a genuine power monster, and Kauhsen's Nürburgring win shows that potential translated into results on European soil as well as in American Can-Am racing.
The 917/10's Turbocharged Development
From Can-Am Ambition to European Interserie
Porsche developed the 917/10 primarily to challenge the dominant McLarens in North America's Can-Am series, fitting a turbocharger to the existing 917's air-cooled flat-12 and producing power figures that dwarfed anything the naturally aspirated 917K running at Le Mans could manage. Mark Donohue's Penske-run 917/10 famously took the 1972 Can-Am title on the back of that turbocharged advantage. The same cars, or close relatives built to similar specification, also competed in Europe's Interserie championship, a sports prototype series that gave privateer and semi-works teams a European outlet for machinery developed largely with Can-Am in mind. Interserie also attracted other manufacturers experimenting with big-displacement prototypes, giving the series its own identity rather than functioning purely as Can-Am's European echo.
Kauhsen's Nürburgring Victory
Willi Kauhsen, a German driver who later ran his own racing team, took one of these 917/10s to victory in the 300km Interserie round at the Nürburgring in 1973. Interserie shared much of its technical spirit with Can-Am, favouring big-engined prototypes with minimal aerodynamic regulation, and the Nürburgring's demanding layout made turbocharged power delivery a genuine test of both car and driver. The win places this chassis firmly within Porsche's wider turbocharged sports prototype story, distinct from, but closely related to, the marque's endurance racing success at Le Mans.
Minichamps' Diecast Rendering of a Can-Am-Era Prototype
Bodywork, Wing and Livery Detail
The 917/10's low, wide bodywork and towering rear wing make it a visually dramatic subject for a 1:18 diecast, and Minichamps captures both the flat, ground-hugging nose and the oversized aero package that big-bore prototypes of this era relied on for stability at speed. Kauhsen's livery and number 2 are reproduced with clean registration across the flanks and nose, and the rear wing is moulded as a separate, thin-profile piece rather than a thickened simplification of the real component.
Structural Rigidity and Build Quality
Diecast construction gives the wide rear bodywork and wing mounts genuine structural rigidity, useful on a subject whose aerodynamic surfaces were as extreme as its power output, and that same rigidity helps the model withstand routine handling far better than a resin alternative would around such thin, extended wing sections. The model's weight in the hand reflects that solid build quality against lighter display alternatives.
A Distinctive Entry in a Porsche Prototype Collection
This 917/10 suits a collection built around Porsche's turbocharged prototype era rather than one focused purely on Le Mans winners, since its Can-Am and Interserie career tells a different, complementary part of the same technical story. It sits naturally alongside a 917K for a direct comparison between the naturally aspirated endurance racer and its forced-induction cousin, or alongside period McLaren Can-Am diecast that the 917/10 was built specifically to beat. Displayed together, the two Porsche prototypes make a genuinely instructive pairing about how far turbocharging pushed sports car performance in a single generation. At around 22 centimetres, it commands the same shelf presence as other big-winged 1970s prototypes.
