About the Porsche 928 Blue AUTOart 1:18

TL;DR: AUTOart's 1:18 diecast Porsche 928 recreates the front-engined V8 grand tourer in blue, doors opening on the metal shell. Used example, box showing traces of storage. Porsche developed the 928 as a potential 911 successor before eventually keeping both models in production.

The 928 tells a different Porsche story to the rear-engined cars that dominate most collections, and that alone makes it worth a place on a shelf that otherwise leans heavily toward the 911.

Casting the 928's Distinctive Shape

The zinc alloy body carries genuine weight, and AUTOart's tooling holds the 928's smooth, integrated bumper design and pop-up headlight housings with the fine detail that shape demands, since flush bodywork shows tooling flaws far more readily than one with visible trim breaks. Blue paint holds an even, consistent gloss across the 928's long, uninterrupted flanks, and the doors operate with hinge tension that feels engineered rather than loose, opening onto a cabin with the driver-focused dashboard the 928 was known for at launch. Shutlines stay tight along the smooth-skinned bodywork, and the stance sits low and wide in a way that reads distinctly different from any 911 on the same shelf. Storage marks affect only the outer box.

A Different Kind of Porsche Story

Porsche built the 928 with a front-mounted V8 and a transaxle layout specifically to move beyond the rear-engined format some engineers considered a liability, and though it never replaced the 911 outright, it ran alongside it for nearly two decades as Porsche's grand touring flagship. That parallel existence gives the 928 genuine standing in Porsche's own internal history rather than making it a footnote. Displayed beside period 911s, the contrast in engineering philosophy is immediately visible, and that contrast is exactly the point of collecting both.
