The GT500 was Carroll Shelby's answer to Mustang buyers who found the GT350 not quite intimidating enough, and this diecast wears that reputation in its stripes.

AUTOart's Casting of the GT500's Muscle

The zinc alloy body carries real heft, and AUTOart's tooling gives the GT500's aggressive fastback nose and racing stripes the crisp registration a livery like this depends on; a blurred or misaligned stripe ruins the whole effect, and here the edges stay sharp against the light blue base. That metallic blue holds even depth across the long hood, with the scoops and vents moulded rather than merely printed on. Doors operate with deliberate hinge resistance, opening onto a cabin trimmed with the driver-focused instrumentation Shelby's cars favoured over plain Mustang trim. Shutlines stay tight along the fastback glass, and the model's stance carries the low, wide presence the real car projected. Storage marks sit on the box alone.

Shelby's Place in the Mustang Story

Carroll Shelby built the GT350 to give the Mustang genuine track credibility, and the GT500 followed as the road-going, big-block-powered flagship for buyers wanting muscle over agility. That split between Shelby's two Mustang philosophies is a genuine collecting angle in itself, and this GT500 represents the louder, more brute-force half of it. Set beside a GT350 or a standard-issue Mustang GT, it demonstrates exactly how far outside contractors could push Ford's platform once given the freedom to do so, which is reason enough to give it shelf space.
