Group B rallying produced some of the most extreme road-derived cars ever built, and the Metro 6R4 was Britain's uncompromising answer to that brief.

Sun Star's Diecast Build and What Opens

Zinc alloy construction gives this Metro genuine weight for its compact footprint, a density that suits the 6R4's stocky, flared bodywork. Doors and bonnet both open, and lifting the bonnet reveals the mid-mounted V6 layout that made the 6R4 so different underneath from any road-going Metro, since the engine sat where a hatchback would normally carry rear seats. Panel gaps run wider than premium resin builds, an honest trait of mainstream diecast tooling, but the wide box arches, roof scoop and #5 Monte Carlo livery with period sponsor decals are all captured with genuine detail. The white and red scheme carries an even, consistent finish appropriate to a factory rally entry.

The Metro 6R4 and Group B's Extreme Era

The 6R4 was Austin Rover's homologation special for Group B rallying, built around a bespoke V6 engine and four-wheel drive fitted to a Metro shell flared out to accommodate the necessary hardware. Tony Pond campaigned the car through the 1986 season, including this Monte Carlo Rally entry, during the final year before Group B was banned following a string of fatal accidents. That short, dramatic era is exactly why 6R4 models carry such weight with British rally enthusiasts today, a genuinely homegrown Group B contender rather than an imported rival.
