The Safari Rally tested cars and crews harder than almost any other event on the calendar, and this Quattro carries that reputation into diecast form.

Sun Star's Diecast Detail on an Endurance Entry

Zinc alloy gives this Quattro real substance in the hand, a weight consistent with a car built to survive thousands of gruelling kilometres over rough East African terrain. Doors and bonnet both open, revealing the turbocharged five-cylinder engine and four-wheel-drive hardware underneath, the combination that made the Quattro so dominant once Audi brought it to competition. Panel gaps run at the wider end typical of mainstream diecast tooling, and the interior is kept functional rather than heavily detailed, but the reinforced bodywork, auxiliary lighting and #12 Safari-specific livery are all reproduced with genuine attention, giving the model a distinctly different character from a tarmac-event Quattro.

Why the Safari Rally Demanded a Different Car

The Safari Rally was notorious for punishing machinery over long stages of rough African terrain, often in extreme heat and dust, and teams reinforced their cars specifically for the event with extra lighting, protective plating and toughened suspension. Audi's Quattro entries for Safari carried visibly different specification from their European tarmac and gravel counterparts, and that adaptation is exactly what distinguishes this particular livery from other 1984-season Quattro models.
