The CLK GTR's dramatic aerodynamic surfacing, developed for its GT racing programme before being adapted for road use, rewards resin's ability to hold sharp, deep-set bodywork with a precision a pressed metal die would struggle to match across such extreme curves. The body is sealed with no opening panels, so the model's fidelity rests entirely on its exterior: consistent panel gaps along the doors, and a black finish that should show deep, even gloss across a shape with very few flat surfaces to hide imperfections. As a roadster variant, the folding roof mechanism area and the transition between windscreen frame and body need particularly clean moulding since that region carries more visual complexity than the coupe version.

The CLK GTR's Homologation Story

Mercedes built the CLK GTR to satisfy GT racing homologation requirements, meaning a genuine racing car had to be adapted into a limited run of road-legal versions rather than the more common approach of building a road car first and racing a modified version later. That reversed development process makes the CLK GTR, and particularly its rarer Roadster form, one of the most extreme homologation specials of the 1990s.
