About the Mercedes 300 SL W198 Roadster Red Norev 1:18

TL;DR: Norev's 1:18 diecast Mercedes 300 SL Roadster in red reproduces the open-top successor to the Gullwing coupe, with opening conventional doors and bonnet exposing the cabin and straight-six. Zinc alloy diecast build. A refined companion piece for a 1950s Mercedes shelf.

Mercedes replaced the Gullwing's dramatic upward-opening doors with conventional hinges for the Roadster, a change that softened the car's drama slightly while improving everyday usability considerably.

Diecast Build and Opening Panels on the 300 SL Roadster

The doors open conventionally rather than upward, and the bonnet lifts to reveal the straight-six engine shared with the coupe, giving this casting a genuinely different handling character to Norev's Gullwing counterpart despite the closely related mechanicals. The zinc alloy diecast gives the low, curved body real weight, and the folded soft-top or optional hardtop detailing leaves the beltline clearly visible. The red paintwork carries a deep, even gloss across the flowing bonnet and rounded rear haunches.

Roadster Versus Coupe on a Mercedes Shelf

Displaying the Roadster alongside the Gullwing coupe tells a genuinely interesting engineering story: the same underlying chassis and running gear, resolved two different ways for two different kinds of driver. The Roadster's conventional doors make it the more practical choice of the pair, a distinction worth understanding when building out a 300 SL grouping. With doors and bonnet opening on both variants, either piece rewards close handling, and together they make a genuinely comprehensive 300 SL display.
